360-million-year old chronicles of ancient sea compiled by Ƶ geologists

Joint research with TatNIPIneft (Tatarstan Petroleum Research Institute) allowed them to reconstruct the sedimentation conditions of rocks with a high content of organic matter at the boundary interval of the Devonian and Carboniferous systems in Tatarstan.

As Acting Director of the Institute of Geology and Petroleum Technologies Vladimir Silantyev said, 360 million years ago, a chain of narrow troughs and depressions passed through the territory of modern Tatarstan, Bashkortostan and Udmurtia – the Kama-Kinel system of troughs (KKSP). The troughs were associated with marine basins in which specific types of sediments enriched in organic matter were deposited. These sediments subsequently formed rocks with oil-generation potential.

Scientists from IGPT and TatNIPIneft conducted a comprehensive study of cores from two wells in the Nizhnekamsk segment of the KKSP. Having studied the composition, textures and microtextures of rocks, paleontological remains, and the type of organic matter, they were able to reconstruct changes in the parameters of the environment in which sediment accumulation took place. Paleontological study also made it possible to clarify the geological age of the sections.

“Domanikoid breeds require a special approach to study,” explained Professor Silantyev. “They differ from the terrigenous and carbonate rocks familiar to geologists. They contain rare paleontological remains. From the point of view of facies analysis they appear too homogeneous. Conodonts, the tooth-like remains of extinct worm-like organisms, helped us study this interval. The identification of biofacies, that is, facies that primarily differ in the complex of fossil remains, made it possible to identify six types of rocks that characterize anoxic, weakly oxygenated and oxic environments. Based on this, it can be argued that the conditions of sedimentation in the ancient sea were constantly changing.”

The study, published made it possible to identify new oil-promising zones, which, according to preliminary calculations, have fairly large hydrocarbon reserves.
